As a professional drone pilot with over 10 years of experience and founder of the UK’s largest drone survey company, I’ve had my hands on virtually every drone that’s hit the market. Through countless hours of flight time and rigorous testing, I’ve watched the industry evolve from clunky, expensive units to today’s remarkably capable budget options.

After thoroughly testing all the latest releases in 2024, I’m excited to share my top picks for drones under £300 in the UK market. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to upgrade your existing kit, these drones offer an impressive balance of features, reliability, and value that would have seemed impossible just a few years ago.

Let me guide you through the standout options that have earned my recommendation after extensive real-world testing.

The DJI Neo (released September 2024) has become my absolute favourite drone, and it’s arguably the most user-friendly drone you’ll ever need.

Flying is remarkably simple: Just press the top button, hold out your hand with the drone on it, then press and hold to initiate takeoff. The drone will follow you or perform your selected maneuvers automatically.

Landing is equally effortless – extend your hand, and the drone gently lands right on it before powering down. No manual control required.

Safety features include built-in propeller guards, so if the drone encounters any obstacles, it safely bounces back a few feet. While it doesn’t fold like the DJI Mini 2, the Neo’s compact size still allows it to fit comfortably in a pocket.

I strongly recommend the Fly More kit for several reasons:

  • The standard flight time is 17 minutes per battery
  • You get three batteries (normally £35 each)
  • Includes a premium carry case
  • Comes with a multi-battery charger for simultaneous charging

A few considerations to keep in mind:

  • Wind performance is limited: Fine below 250 feet, but higher altitudes will drain the battery quickly when flying against wind
  • The drone produces a high-pitched sound – while it doesn’t carry far, it’s worth noting

For UK pilots, no license is required – you only need an operator ID, which can be obtained by completing a simple online form in about two minutes.

I have to rank the DJI Mini 4K as my second choice after the Neo. I got my hands on it when it was released in April 2024. I find it a bit of an odd release since the Neo came out just a few months later in September with a 4K camera at half the price. While I understand DJI wanted to upgrade their cheapest ‘Mini‘ range to 4K, I’m still scratching my head about the timing.

I’ve found some good features that might appeal to traditional drone enthusiasts. What impressed me most is the flight time – I get a solid 31 minutes in the air, nearly double what I get with my Neo.

I also love that I can expand the storage by popping in an SD card up to 256GB, which gives me more flexibility than the Neo’s fixed storage. After testing both cameras extensively, I’d say they’re practically identical in quality.

One downside I’ve noticed is the weight – it’s almost twice as heavy as my Neo. I find it much bulkier too, so unlike my Neo that I can slip into my pocket, I need to pack this one away properly when I’m traveling. Having owned the original DJI Mini 2 back in 2020, I appreciate the Mini series, but I feel this model lacks a compelling unique feature.

At the £300 price point, I struggle to recommend it over the Neo Fly More kit. I miss getting those extra batteries, charging blocks, and accessories that come with the Neo package. I’ve also found the learning curve steeper – I had to use a traditional controller instead of the Neo’s simpler interface.

Again no UK drone licence is required with this drone, just the onlien operator ID form filled out.

There’s no mobile app or auto tracking, and I need to manually handle takeoffs and landings. The lack of propeller guards and limited obstacle avoidance (only downward sensors) means I have to be much more careful when flying.

While it’s still a solid drone, I keep recommending the Neo to beginners in 2024. From my experience, the Neo just offers more value – newer features, easier controls, and better accessories included in the price. The Mini 4K is good, but for your money in 2024, I think the Neo is the smarter choice.

Looking back to 2023, this was my go-to recommendation for budget flyers as a cheaper alternative to the DJI Mini 2. But now in 2024, with the Neo and Mini 4K available, it’s dropped to my third choice.

I’ll be upfront – this isn’t a DJI drone, and I usually don’t get excited about non-DJI drones (except maybe Autel, but I think I’m just a sucker for their orange color).

That said, I’ve found Potensic to be a surprisingly decent brand. Like my top picks, it’s under 250g, so you won’t need a license in the UK. I’ve been impressed that it matches the DJI Mini 4K’s flight time.

Now, you’re probably wondering what corners were cut to hit that lower price point. In my testing, the range is pretty limited – you’ll be lucky to get 6km, and I notice the signal gets hazy past 4km. The camera’s just okay – I find it a bit blurry and struggles in low light. But I’ll give credit where it’s due – it handles wind surprisingly well.

While the plastic build feels cheaper in my hands, you do get some nice extras for roughly the same price as the bare Mini 4K – two spare batteries and a carry bag included. I’m not the biggest fan of the controller though – it’s more like a video game controller with your phone slotted in the middle, and I can’t grip it as comfortably as my DJI controllers.

Bottom line, if you’re after a traditional drone with some included accessories at the Mini 4K’s price point, it’s worth considering. But honestly, I’d recommend investing in DJI’s reliability – especially now that you can get the Neo with all its modern features and extras for about the same price.

While the ATOM SE is decent, the Neo simply gives you better value, the DJI brand reliability, and the latest tech for your money in 2024.

Conclusion

After extensively testing these drones throughout 2024, the DJI Neo stands out as the clear best drone under £300 in the UK market. Its combination of beginner-friendly features, impressive 4K camera capabilities, and comprehensive Fly More kit makes it an unbeatable value proposition. The inclusion of propeller guards, palm-launch functionality, and advanced safety features puts it leagues ahead of similarly priced competitors, while its compact design and straightforward controls make it accessible to pilots of all skill levels.

While both the DJI Mini 4K and Potensic ATOM SE offer compelling features in their own right – with the Mini 4K boasting superior flight time and the ATOM SE including generous accessories – they simply can’t match the Neo’s overall package. For newcomers to drone photography or experienced pilots seeking a reliable secondary unit, the Neo represents the perfect balance of innovation, safety, and affordability. Its September 2024 release has effectively redefined what we can expect from an entry-level drone, making previous recommendations in this price range feel outdated by comparison.
